Note: This article is also available at Ideas Without End here. What started out as a plan for a single article has turned by some process into an informal series blog; I won’t be religiously writing about each episode as I watch the series, but as and when sections of it stand out as interesting [...]

The Difference Between Credibility and Realism in Episodes 1 and 2 of “Eureka Seven”
Note: This article is also available at Ideas Without End here With regard to science fiction, I hold that setting should not overshadow plot, and exposition should be limited to the minimum necessary for the story. The 2005-06 series Eureka Seven, in its opening two episodes, effectively creates a sci-fi universe that is entirely believable, populated with [...]

Complex feelings about moral complexity (or, A paean to Paptimus-sama)
I got the idea for this post while reading John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War, but knowledge thereof isn’t required, and I’ll try not to spoil it too badly. Actually, it’s the seventh, but I figure now’s as good a time as any to stop numbering them and just admit they’re a (semi-)regular feature. Woo! Anyhow, this time I’m doing an essay called “Coming to Terms” by Gary K. Wolfe. It’s short, so hopefully I can get this entry done before the scourging weather [...]

“By silverfish imperatrix whose incorrupted eye…”
If you’re following at home, you’ll already know that I started Aria: the Animation. And I just finished it. I know there’s a bunch more of it, but I dunno when I’ll finish it — if I learned one thing (and I’d like to think I learned several, but still), it’s that I can’t really [...]
