Neutrality and the Unheard Woes of the Omnifan

This is true, but this is also not true. Do you see the aforementioned sentence as two arguments, or just one?

It has been a long time since I last wrote. The rigorous clacking of keyboard keys and the weaving of ideas that boggle the mind and soul of the Japanese visual media consumer ring faintly in my mind as I stare intently at the blankness that is the Add New Post page. Alas, these thoughts that are constantly swirling my mind are demanding an outlet of protest, for they have been suppressed for far too long.

What am I talking about, exactly? What ails the elusive enigma to the point of unprecedented resurrection? That is, simply being, the dissection of the very existence of the omnifan.

Otaku annotated: adventures in moe, porn, and postmodernism

I found Hiroki Azuma’s Otaku: Japan’s Database Animals at the university library — seven or so months ago. And, what do you know, it’s due back. Overdue, probably. So I suppose I should annotate this thing at long last, for your benefit and mine.

It’s a short book, but I won’t be entirely exhaustive here. I’ll omit basic overviews of things many of us would find intuitive anyway, and some of the more extreme postmodern/poststructural business, in the assumption that you’ll read the book yourself if you’re looking for that sort of thing. It must be said, though, that, while Azuma got his start as a Derrida scholar, Otaku is very readable even if you aren’t so familiar with Baudrillard, Lacan, and their ilk — and, that being the case, I suppose I ought to make this post more or less readable, too.

Blurbing…fashion in Japan, from the Japanese

So you read it – there is an implicit cultural emulation within the inundation of Western fashion in Japan. To the Black-Face (Ganguro), Western fashion serves as a counter hegemony against the traditional and conservative past Japanese masculine ideology that has been imposed upon women. While the past is usually associated with national identity, these new trends also serve to reconstitute the national imagination – there is a dialectical relationship between the economic base (people) and the ideological structure.

Pretty interesting.
