I'm going to have a go at Basara one of these days. Egads, go and watch DYRL? already. It's a different beast, spawning many anime fans from both sides of the Pacific. I can't prefer it over SDFM, but within it is the stuff that makes Macross what it is, and has built its fandom.

Interestingly enough, WRL isn't much within the hardcore fandom. This rather disappointed me, as most of the people I thought would like to 'remember' would be people like myself. However I noticed very strong divisions within the fandom (though nowhere as rude as in Gundam), and there is a rather strong group who are rather elitist and favor a kind of Macross that I would imagine appeals to Gundam fans:

SDFM
Macross II (not canon)
Macross Plus

Macross 7 was the break. Many American fans HATED it, and the hate continued to the panning of Macross Zero, and a complete rejection of Frontier by these people. I want to make it clear that I'm not disparaging this view, the same way many Macross fans disparage Robotech and its fans. I actually love Robotech (especially the novels, which are w e i r d, especially when they depart from the main story and write the future events). The hardcore fans are hardcore, and I have much respect for that.

What I do espouse is a Catholic love for Macross, which can be really silly if you think about it, but here I am. Re the future of WRL: we're doing a manga/webcomic doujin of Macross Frontier, titled "The End of the Circle." Mechafetish and I have taken A LOT of notes from Bakuman hehe, and he's writing the 'names' as we speak. We're in the hunt of local illustrators we're willing to commission for the work. We're going to change a LOT of things, and possibly please NO ONE with the liberties we're taking and the choices of material to pay homage to, but fuck it. We Remember Love.

Happy New Year!

You know, I tried to engineer at least the beginning of this post in a way that would make you, specifically, kick your chair over and start singing "My Boyfriend is a Pilot." Because I figure if it's Macross related, and Ghostlightning approves, I've pretty much done well!

I'm still not sure I can write about Basara -- so much in M7 plays on raw emotion that it's difficult to say more than "OMG ROCKSCREAM YESSS." I think my approach here was to write around Basara and let the screencaps do their job.

Still haven't seen the Plus movie. Hell, I haven't seen Do You Remember Love. Maybe those will be my new year's gifts to myself.

I'd say that, purely considering its role in Macross fandom, WRL is a success. It's pretty much what kicked me into gear and made me watch it, and so I'm excited to hear that you think I've done the show justice in some way. You keep making Macross fans, and I'm sure those fans will keep remembering love in return.

Do it; it's totally worth it. The first series isn't even that long, all things being relative (36 episodes, I think).

I don't know where to begin. This is like some Christmas present by the anime blogosphere. ^_^

I was slaving through some ridiculously nerdy work quantifying deaths in Gundam when I thought I needed a break and went offline. In that time I decided to rewatch Macross Frontier episode 15: yes, the sing off. So when I get back online and find this in my feed reader I swear to you I had a vision of Minmay, Mylene, Ranka, Sheryl, and what the hell even Sharon in Santa Claus outfits emerging from a space fold to bring me this post and tell me that I've been a very good fan over the whole year.

Great moments, all of them. For one I find it surprising in an enviable way how you can write about Basara -- I always want to but never could figure out what to say. Also, very good stuff on the SDF-1 in Macross Plus, egads I wish I wrote that myself. You are right when you said that both fist-pumping and horror are at play in the scene. I'm going to rewatch the movie version for good measure.

I started WRL because I wanted to see loving posts for my favorite show and franchise, and this year has been very good to me in that I didn't feel like a voice in the desert, shouting at a mountain to LISTEN TO MY SONG. The amount of love for Macross around is perceptible, and I can't be happier.

Thank you and Merry Christmas.
