I don’t know how long the idea’s been floating around in Japan before the 1900s (not being closely read on Japanese sociology and sociological history), but I think Class S started the process of trying to sexualize the concept in a feminist push to gain wider acceptance of lesbianism. And when I say “Class S” you might as well just imagine I said “Marimite” because, in terms of narrative content, they’re similar–although much, much removed from each other in time and intent, I think.

The comment about the admissibility in Japan of a girl’s first love to be another girl is intriguing. Is it accepted, similar to a girl being a tomboy, that she will ‘grow out of it’ at some point, or is it simply a difference of cultural expectations? In some Asian cultures, of course, girls who are close friends will hold hands in public settings as a gesture of friendship—something that, in a couple of the schools I have been to, would likely result in a trip to the guidance counselor (among other things, I’m sure).
